History of Madisonville
The area of Madisonville was once inhabited by the Chiconcte Native Americans around the 1800s. The area was renamed Madisonville in 1810 in honor of President James Madison. After the capture of New Orleans during the Civil War, the economy of Madisonville was completely devastated and didn't recover for several years. All proceeds from the celebration go to the Lake Ponchartrain Basin Maritime Museum. The museum is made up of over 30,000 square feet of space and contains enough seating space for 250 people.
Since the city is rich with history, you can find eight historical sites that are all listed on the National Historic Register. Architecture can be found from Creole Cottage to Creek Revival. Some of the best historic sites to visit include the Otis House, The Madisonville Bank, the Regent Square Home and the old Madisonville Town Hall and Jail.
The Fairview Riverside State Park is another great place to visit. The Otis House is located in the park. This house is an early Victorian home built in the 1880s by WT Jay. In 1930, Frank Otis bought the home and renovated it, then donated it and the surrounding land to the state of Louisiana. The park also has great accommodations for overnight visitors that include RV parks and campsites.
