History of Covington
Europeans were the first known settlers to the area now known as Covington in 1800. Jacques Dreux was the first settler to the area, but it was John Wharton Collins who established a town in 1883. The first town was called Wharton, after John Wharton Collins. He is now buried in the cemetery across from City Hall in a corner plot.
After the Civil War, the city was renamed to Covington after General Leonard Covington, a hero of the war. Commerce first came to the area by boats on the Bogue Falaya River. Then, in 1888, more commerce came by railroad. Since the late 20th century, several Covington residents have been commuting to New Orleans for work.

Covington schools are served by the St. Tammany Parish School District. The district is made up of three elementary schools, three middle schools, two junior high schools and one high school.
